coconut-eating mongoose

this is a mongoose i met at the Hawai’i Tropical Botanical Garden, which is an incredibly beautiful and awe-inspiring place to visit. i’d never actually seen a mongoose before, so that was pretty exciting for me. i knew it was a new animal and was so happy that the “security guard” at the botanical garden was able to tell me what it was.

at first he laughed at me for asking. “what, do you live in a city or something?” he said. yep! i do. luckily the man took pity on me and fed the resident mongooses some fresh coconut and beef jerky, so i actually got to see somewhat of a mongoose parade.

and then he played me some songs on his ukelele and shared his coconut with me, and that was even better.

i was just realizing how much i take photos of things and say, “i don’t know why i like it, but i really do.” some things just seem inherently likeable, at least for the most part – flowers are one. they please several of the senses and make life happen. i mean, they’re part of the cycle and all that. what’s not to like?

but what i was going to say starting out was and is: i don’t know why i deeply love watching bees work their magic on flowers, but i really do.

i like thinking about where they’ve been and where they are going. i like it that bees have a clear mission in life, and they execute it. no questions asked. at least i don’t think so! it is hard to imagine bees spending the day on a tiny couch, thinking, man…i just don’t feel like flying around and visiting all those flowers today. it’s just not the day for that. i don’t know what i feel like doing but…maybe nothing.

No indeed – that’s me thinking that and wishing  i had the simplictity and focus of purpose of a bee.

i liked looking at this beautiful flower, but i liked thinking about its relationship with the bee even more. also i love fuzz, but that’s another story.
