this photo does not begin to do justice to the glory!!! that is the mac ‘n cheese starter(!) at Citizen’s Band restaurant in San Francisco. SOMA, San Francisco, on Folsom at 8th Street. so, SO close to my house – i am kicking myself for not having eaten it a lot sooner but I guess the fact that the place is kinda subtle (oh, but i love subtle!) and kinda meaty (oh, but so rarely is a San Francisco restaurant totally meaty) kept me out. I will forgive myself. And now just work on figuring out how often I am allowed to go back.

Just so we are clear! There is a delicious square (yay square!) of macaroni and cheese lurking at the bottom of this creation, and it is perfectly cheesy and uses actual macaroni noodles. or elbow or what have you. it’s in a small lake of cheese, which is not overpowering or too much, miraculously.

those are onion rings on top of it. fried to perfection! really light. probably the lightest, most perfect onion rings i’ve ever had the pleasure of eating — and i have eaten many an onion ring.

cheese is grated on top and boy am i a fan of that decision.

i heard about this genius dish a few months ago from a great wonderful cook and friend of mine and it sounded…a little overwhelming. like it could be too much. waaay too much. she finally escorted me there at a time when i was ready for too much. but it wasn’t! it was the perfect amount of everything, including portion size. i mean, as a meal, not a starter, unless you’re sharing ( i did, a little bit. and also ate some really delicious roasted brussel sprouts. there’s a caramelized cauliflower option i have a hankering for now too).

my in-the-know pal makes a lot of delicious veggie creations and shares recipes and photos of them and you should read about and make them too! go here! and when you’re ready for some serious comfort food in San Francisco, now you know where to find that too.
